Soundproofing Basement Ceilings
Soundproofing Basement Ceiling? Limited ceiling height?
Oscar Iso-Mount – the easy to install, space saving isolation hanger, ideal for soundproofing basement ceilings. Lose only a few millimetres ceiling height but with the high performance of far deeper systems. Installation by builder or competant DIY person.
Soundproofing a basement ceiling doesn’t mean you have to lose ceiling height because the Iso-Mounts are screwed to the side of timber joists instead on underneath. This purpose designed basement ceiling soundproofing system ensures absolute minimum ceiling height loss.
Oscar Iso-Mount Review
“The whole transaction has been simple and easy. I fitted the ceiling this weekend and it’s made an instant difference. So much so that I had to ask the owner of the flat above if he had been using the room above. I will recommend the product to my friends and will use it on other ceilings in my flat. Keep up the good work.”Jim Hood
How does sound transmit through floors (and walls)?
Sound passes through ceilings and floors as vibrations.
For example – sound pressure waves generated by a music system or voices in an upper flat, penetrate and travel through the floor boards, joists and ceiling in the form of vibration. They radiate from the ceiling as sound pressure again; weaker but in many cases still too powerful [Loud]. Either side of joists, the sound pressure turns to vibration through the floor – back to sound pressure through the air void – vibration again through the ceiling – and back to sound pressure in the flat below.

How does a soundproofing basement ceiling work?
Two factors are fundamental to success:
- Break the path of vibration between ceiling and floor above With Oscar Iso-Mounts
- Absorb the sound pressure passing through the void
With a high density acoustic absorber packed into the space without gaps: our preferred absorber is Celbar recycled loosefill cellulose fibre. Celbar is a better insulator than glass fibre and doesn’t have the irritating itch.
How much sound will an Oscar Iso-Mount soundproofing basement ceiling eliminate?
Acoustic testing has shown that a bad noise Building Regulations Approved Document E fail can be turned into an easy pass. Independent testing on a house (ref 19 Wilberforce Road) showed that resistance to airbourne sound (speech, music etc.) increased by 23dB DnT, + Ctr and impact sound insulation increased by 24dB LnT,w; a significant and worthwhile difference.
The installation of the Oscar Iso-Mount Sound proofing ceiling easily complied with the stringent requirements of the 2010 Building Regulations Approved Document E for Airbourne and Impact Sound.
